Level 3 Award in Education and Training
The BTEC Level 3 Award in Education and Training (formally PTLLS) is a competence-based qualification. It has been designed for those who want to start a career as a teacher in the further education sector.
Suitable candidates must be competent in the field or the subject they want to teach in, and have a basic understanding of lifelong learning. They must further have Level 2 written and spoken English (Equivalent to GCSE A-C) and be IT literate (Internet, Microsoft office).
The BTEC Level 3 Award in Education and Training is an introductory teaching qualification. This qualification is for learners who work, or want to work as teachers, trainers in the further education and skills sector. It is for learners who are not in a teaching role and or have just started teaching. As well as learners who want a short course to enable them to make career choices.
This Award will provide sufficient evidence that the learner has acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to prepare, plan, deliver and evaluate basic teaching and learning sessions, in a variety of teaching or training contexts. The qualification has no minimum teaching practice requirement, However, there is a minimum requirement to take part in micro–teaching session.
The leaner must achieve 12 credits from the units below to successfully complete this qualification.
- Understanding Roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
This is the mandatory unit, in this unit you will learn about your role as a teacher in lifelong learning. It is the foundation of the course and will give the leaner all the knowledge they need to be effective as a teacher in lifelong learning.
- Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training
This unit is both a knowledge and practical unit. It will give the leaner the understanding that they need to be able to understand the various learning and teaching strategies and methods. They will also learn about planning an inclusive session, using inclusive approaches and assessment methods. Leaners will get the opportunity to plan and deliver a short lesson as part of their micro-teach.
- Understanding the principles and practices of assessment and Understanding Assessment in Education and Training (3 credits)
This unit is about assessment. If in the future the leaner decides to become an Assessor, having completed this unit they will get an exemption for unit 1 of the Assessor course.
Course Duration/Credit Value
The course has a Credit Value of 12. Leaners must do 48 to 61 guided learning hours.
Leaners will be assessed through a series of methods to assess their knowledge. Unit 2 will be assessed through them practically delivering a micro-teach session where they will be observed by their Assessor preparing, planning, delivering, assessing and evaluating a lesson.
All successful candidates will achieve the BTEC Level 3 Award in Education and Training.
Learners who have achieved the BTEC Level 3 Award in Education and Training can progress to the Pearson BTEC Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training.
