Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training


    Eligibility/ Suitability

    The main aim of this qualification is to prepare trainee teachers to teach in a range of contexts. There is a significant practice requirement for this qualification as learners are required to provide evidence of competence when undertaking teaching and/or training responsibilities.

    This qualification meets the needs of trainee teachers, including individuals who are not currently teaching and training but who can meet the practice requirements. It further meets the needs of individuals who are currently teaching and training (including those who have just begun teaching and training) who can meet the practice requirements and individuals who are currently working as assessors and who wish to achieve a teaching qualification. The objective of this qualification is to show occupational competence in a teaching role within the workplace.

    Learners are not required to have achieved a Level 3 Award in Education and Training or a

    Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training before undertaking a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.


    Course Description/ Content

    The NCFE Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is a competence-based qualification, this means that it is a job ready qualification which requires learners to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to work in a specific industry.

    All trainee teachers joining the qualification programme will undertake an initial assessment of skills in English, mathematics and ICT. Potential teacher trainees wishing to take any of the specialist optional units will need to provide evidence of Level 3 personal skills in English or mathematics, depending on the specialist unit they wish to undertake.

    The practice element is a vital aspect of this qualification, as it provides the learner with high-quality initial teacher training. There is a requirement for a minimum of 100 hours of practice and a requirement to evidence working with groups of learners to achieve this qualification.



    Leaners must achieve 75 credits from the 4 mandatory units listed below:

    • Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training
    • Developing Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training
    • Theories, Principles and Models in Education and Training
    • Wider Professional Practice and Development in Education and Training


    They must further achieve 45 credits from an optional 35 units. Some of which include:

    • Action Research
    • Delivering Employability Skills
    • Develop and Prepare Resources for Learning and Development
    • Literacy and ESOL and the Learners
    • Literacy and ESOL Theories and Frameworks

    Course Duration/Credit Value

    The course has a Credit Value of 120.  Leaners must do a minimum of 360-500 guided learning hours and 100 hours of teaching practice.


    There must be a minimum of 8 observations totalling a minimum of 8 hours.

    Any single observation must be a minimum of 30 minutes. Learners must also complete an externally moderated portfolio of evidence. To pass learners must provide adequate evidence to meet all the learning outcomes and assessment criteria.



    All successful candidates will achieve the NCFE Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.



    Learners who have achieved the NCFE Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training can progress onto the Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
