Functional Skills Maths qualifications are designed to teach you how to apply core numeracy skills to everyday life. These practical, government-approved qualifications focus on the maths you need for:

Entry Level 1, 2 & 3:
Designed for those with little or no prior maths knowledge

You will learn to:
• Recognise and write numbers up to 20
• Add and subtract small numbers
• Understand simple shapes and sizes
• Use basic time (hours, days) and money (coins, prices)
• Solve simple, everyday maths problems (e.g. shopping or measuring)
Learners who can do simple maths and want to build more confidence.

You will learn to:
• Count, read, write and compare numbers up to 100
• Add and subtract using larger numbers
• Understand halves and quarters (basic fractions)
• Work with simple measurements (length, weight, capacity)
• Use coins, notes, and time to solve practical problems
Learners who have basic maths skills and want to prepare for more advanced study or work.
You will learn to:
• Multiply and divide whole numbers
• Use simple fractions, decimals, and percentages
• Measure accurately using standard units
• Interpret simple charts, tables, and graphs
• Solve problems involving money, time, and distance
Learners who want to improve their maths for work or everyday use — roughly equivalent to GCSE grade D–E (3).
You will learn to:
• Work confidently with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages
• Understand ratios and proportions
• Calculate area, perimeter, and volume
• Read and interpret data in charts, graphs, and tables
• Apply maths to solve real-world problems (budgeting, shopping, measurements)
Learners aiming for higher education, apprenticeships, or professional employment — equivalent to GCSE grade 4–5 (C).
You will learn to:
• Use advanced calculations with fractions, ratios, and percentages
• Work with formulae and algebra in practical contexts
• Solve multi-step problems involving measurements and geometry
• Analyse and present data using charts and graphs
• Apply maths to complex real-life scenarios, such as business, planning, or finance
Functional Skills Maths assessments usually include:
1. Non-calculator section – to test your mental maths skills
2. Calculator section – to solve real-life problems using a calculator
You will be tested on three main areas:
• Number (basic calculations, fractions, decimals, percentages)
• Measure, Shape, and Space (length, area, volume, time, money)
• Handling Data (charts, graphs, statistics, averages)
